Yulungchuan Ecological Trail。Luye Yong’an Community

Yulungchuan is a natural mountain creek in Luye Yong’an Community, Taitung. With a few steps down, the clear stream water flow can be seen. Because of the incised valley terrain, it is rich with flora and fauna. Just by turning around a rock, you can find the 2- color tones crab (Geothelphusa Olea).

This small path along the Yulungchuan creek used to be the shortcut between Yong’an Community and Luye Plateau. After the road was built, the residents started to drive or bike. Because of this road, this small path has been abandoned until the residents re-built it as an Ecological Trail.

The trail starts from the village. In just a few steps down lies a stream with trickling water. The places shown with ripples in the photo are locations of the mountain springs.

The beginning part of the ecological trail is an elevated wooden pass. The creek flows below.

On both sides of the wooden pass are the crabs’ resting places. Mr. Liu, a volunteer tour guide, picked up a piece of rock and turned it around. A 2-color tones crab showed up with babies under her belly.

While I was searching the crabs, I found the black round shape seeds by the creek. This is the seed of Rusty-Leaf Muuna. They are so cute!

Towards the end of the wooden pass, you can enter the second part of the trail. I found another crab below the steps.

The trickling water flow began to flow faster and with more volumes in this area due to the terrain. The area is full of blossoming Butterfly Lilies. The fragrance of the flowers feels so satisfying.

Lots of abandoned ponds have become ecological ponds filled with water plants. It is a great place to observe frogs, dragonflies and damselflies. Nectar plants are around the ponds attracting many fluttering butterflies.

All kinds of frogs can be observed along the trail. During the peak time, be careful not to step on them. I was so excited by Mr. Liu’s description. The muddy trail here is covered by the colorful tires. The elevated used color- painted tires are for people to walk on so that the frogs and crabs would not be stepped on. This is a very thoughtful idea. Following this trail takes you to the Luye Plateau known for a breathtaking view. Read More

Taitung Luye Plateau

Paragliding take-off field

Located in the Yongan community, Luye Plateau has a large field with special cliffs and flat terrain that makes an ideal place for paragliding. From April to September each year, players are gathering here to show off their talent. The gorgeous chessboard farmland can be viewed during take-off.

I finally arrived here, but due to an unsuitable weather for paragliding, I was not able to see them. Nevertheless, just by watching the open field, I had complaints.

There is a three-story pavilion on the open grass filed which offers a panoramic view of the mountains and green field.

Luye Plateau is famous for its tea and also the origin place of the champion tea “Fulu Tea”. While walking in the plateau, many busy tea workers are seen along the hills side of the tea garden.

With the temperature difference between day and night as well as the inherent geographical advantage, “FuluTea” provides a highly recognized sweet fragrance.

Many teashops are available in the Luye Plateau. Some of them offer a tea making DIY experience.

“291 Tea Restaurant” provides excellent tea meals. Each meal contains tea flavor, so does the white rice. I was very impressed by each dish.

(Picture on the right): This is the black tea rice with pure tea and rice fragrances.

(Picture on the lower left): These appetizers were salted with tea oil. It has skinless peppers, radishes, cucumber, and other side dishes.

(Picture on the upper left): “Peeling chili tea oil chicken soup” is cooked with peeling chili tea oil. The chicken is a range chicken so the meat and soup were so tasty.

(Picture on the upper right): I really like this dish-“Stir-fry Bamboo shoot with tea oil”. The owner of the restaurant plants these bamboo shoots. They taste so sweet and fresh.

(Picture on the lower right): The “Fired tofu” dish- the tofu is wrapped with green tea powders and then deep-fried. The green tea has a grease reduction effect that makes the fry tofu taste crispy outside and soft inside without a greasy flavor.

(Picture on the left): My favorite dish is the “ Black tea braised pork”. It has a great taste. Since it is braised with black tea, the pork contains the tea fragrance. I could not help have one piece after another.

The restaurant is surrounded by the tea field owned by the owners, Mr Gan, Zhen Feng and his wife. It offers a great view. Since both of them are tea experts, all the dishes they prepared with tea flavors have attracted many famous restaurant chefs to come to learn!

Amis kakeng Musical Group

(Kakeng Musical Group is playing the traditional bamboo musical instrument- Bamboo Bell)

The Amis aborigines love dancing and singing. They make their instruments from the natural environment. It said that there were at least 30 to 40 different kinds of traditional instruments in the tribe; however, they were lost. The Kakeng Musical Group spent years to re-make these bamboo musical instruments based on the old documentation.

(Bamboo rainstick and bamboo drum)

These traditional musical instruments are used in the daily life, such as “Bamboo Drum” being used to deter the birds during harvest time. “Nose Pipes” is used to communicate among the people. “Bamboo Bell” is also known as “kakeng” in Amis language and used to announce good news during the son-in-law acceptance by bride’s family.

(The group members are showing the audiences how to use these instruments.)

Amis Musical Group performs twice in the Amis Folk Center daily during summer time. I had this great chance to see their performance. Before the show starts, audiences can experience these instruments on the stage.

(Xylophone is made with Jioucyong Wood.)

The members in the Kankeng Musical Group do not have any professional training. The group consists of different age members; the youngest is only 5 years old and the oldest around 80. However, the performers are usually students who practice after school or during holidays and weekends.

This cute little girl is playing the drum and she is the youngest in the group.

[團員用鼻笛表演馬蘭姑娘](“Malan Girl” is performed with the Nose Pipe.)

These traditional musical instruments used to be the percussion tools in daily life. They have evolved to become musical instruments. The ancestor’s wisdom has been passed on. It is such a delightful thing to do.

Besides the percussion instrument performance, there are also Bamboo Cannon (Salifong), Swing (Tananoyan), and Archery (Mipana) activities. Bamboo Cannon is used to deter birds in order to protect crops. It is also used to report information to the ancestors, drive off evil spirits, and bless for the tribes during the ceremony.

The bamboo cannon fire was made by utilizing the chemical reaction created by adding water to the calcium carbide and producing acetylene gas in the bamboo tube, which was then lit by fire to make loud explosions

The noise was extremely loud. Although I had myself prepared for the loud noise, it still almost scared me to death. After shooting for many time, finally I got one that has the fire sparks.

(Amis traditional housing)

(A view inside the house)

The Amis Folk Center is about 2 hectare large. Besides the View Platform and stage, there are also a several imitated Amis thatched bamboo houses. The Amis traditional architecture patterns can be observed in the house. It’s worthwhile to visit here while you are in Taitung. Read More

Hualien, Jian。Wild Vegetable Market

The Amis tribe in Taiwan is the one that knows how to cook wild vegetables. They find available plants at places like beach, creek, forest, farm field, and streets. Most of us may see those plants as inedible items, but those plants could become delicious dishes by the Amis. There is a “Bangzha Wild Vegetable Street” in the evening market in Hualie Jian where a variety of wild vegetables, seaweeds, and rare ingredients are sold. It is a unique wild vegetable market in Taiwan.

The Amis women need to buy the daily food every early morning. The Japanese established a tennis racket factory in Jian during the 60th’s. All the women working factory had no time to buy any household food. The elderly in the tribe therefore started to sell the wild vegetable and homemade mochi next to the factory gradually evolving into today’s evening market. Now there are at least 20 vegetable vendors gathering on the “Bangzha Wild Vegetable Street”. They open around 2:00pm and close around 7:00pm.

Bitter Gourd

Wild vegetable grow by itself on the ground, therefore, you can collect lots of variety of the plants, but with very limited amount. Because eating healthy is the trend now, more people are aware of the good nutrition that the wild vegetables offer; therefore, some of the wild vegetables are planted by the professionals. Bitter Gourd is one of them and can be purchased in many places.

Tire Bitter Gourd

The cute round shape green fruit tastes dry and bitter and has the look of a tire; therefore, Amis named it “Tire Bitter Gourd”. It belongs to the eggplant family. The method in preparing the Tire Bitter Gourd is to boil first and then add salt or soil sauce. Sometimes it can be cooked for the soup, salad, or stir fry with small dry fish.

Yellow Rattan Core

As we all know, the stem of the rattan can be made into rattan furniture, such as, rattan chair, rattan bed… and so on. We rarely know that the top core stem are also edible. It can be cooked with pork chops to make soup. It has a bit sweet and dry flavor after the first bitter taste. It is a popular dish in the Amis tribe.

Lover’s tear (Rain Mushroom)

Beside the wild vegetables, the Amis women would collect the intertidal seaweed and algae. The Rain Mushroom (Lover’s tear) in the photo does not grow on the beach. It grows on the grass after the rain. It tastes crispy and fresh. It can be prepared as salad or cooked in soup.

Small Onion ( Fire Onion)

They look like the garlic, but they are actually small onions. It is also named “Fire Onion”. It tastes like the onion, but it is not as spicy as onions.

Bread Fruit

The Bread Fruit are in season from July through August. If you come to the wild vegetable market during this time, Bread Fruit can be seen. It tastes very good in the soup!

Handmade Mochi

Betel Nut Bud

The fruit of the Betel Nut is made for the chewing Betel Nut. The bud can also be cooked as a delicious dish. I tasted the Betel Nut Bud Salad which is very fresh and sweet.

Marinade Hot Red Pepper

Lots of marinade products can be seen in the market. They are in the jars with hot red pepper, green pepper, salted pork, and sea snails.

The market is the place to see the local life and taste the local delicacies. When you come to Hualien Jian, make sure to stop by the evening market and have a glance of the wild vegetable culture of the Amis!

Steel Pipe Black Tea。Hualien

A few rare Steel Pipe Black Tea shops still exist in Hualien. Black Tea is not only coming down from the ceiling, but also is cold without adding ice cubes. Once I entered the shop, I can see many steel pipes vertically hanging from the ceiling.

The cooked black tea and other beverages are made and stored on the second floor. To save time from going up and down stairs, the drinks are coming down through the pipes. Once the faucet is turned on, black tea is out and ready for the customers.

There are 2 layers of the pipe which includes the internal layer for the beverage deliver tube and external layer for the ice water tube. Through the circling the cold water, the black tea in the internal tube stays cold. Without adding any ice, we can still drink cold black tea. We don’t have to worry about if the flavor of the black tea would be diluted by adding the ice in it.

Beside the black tea, the shop also offers almond tea, grass jelly tea, sour plum juice, peanut cold soup, almond cold soup, bakeries, and old time flavor western desserts.

Lot of almond tea now is made with the almond powder. However, the almond tea in the Steel Pipe Black Tea shop is made by peeling off almonds, grinding them to powder, and cooking them until they are ready. The owner prepares all these process himself. The almond tea is indeed excellent!

This western dessert has a thin crispy outside and soft inside. The flavor is very similar to that of the Macaron. It was a very popular western dessert in the early years of Taiwan.

With the clear glass, the black tea looks very old fashion. To me, the taste of the black tea is not important; the wisdom of keeping the traditional cold beverages is most precious! Read More
