Shanbanqiao Opera Life Cultural Center

Chinese Opera Facial Makeup is done with different colors and lines to present different characters and fates. Through the facial outline, “Sheng (male)”, “Dan (female)”, ”Jing (colorful facial-radical character)”, Mo (elderly)” “Chou (comedian)” present different roles, expressions, opera effects, and the unique beauty of art. If you would like to know the story of each character, come to visit “Shanbanqiao Opera Life Cultural Center” in Sanyi Township, Miaoli County.

The museum is located at the intersection about 19 kilometers from the Miao County Road 130. An eye-catching sign is set up on the road side. It has a wooden bridge constructed with three large wood boards, so it is named “Shanbanqiao (three banqiao). The wooden bridge has been replaced by a concrete bridge now.

A large colored facial can be seen once we entered the park.

Mr. Lin Wenyuan and his wife were doing wood engrave work in downtown Sanyi. They moved back to their hometown in the mountain to take care of their ill father. They recognized that the wood work business had declined and there was a need to transform their business. From the wood sculpture creation to wood sculpture teaching, the Opera Facial Painting was created and the museum was built.

Different facial colors have different meanings. The main role is the red color which presents integrity, justice, utter devotion. The black is integrity, simple and honest. The white is sinister and treacherous cunning. The blue is strong temper and impertinent. The yellow is brutal. The gold is deities.

Lots of different sized decorations made from the opera facials can be seen in the park, including the street lamp.

Along the wooden walkway, we entered the museum. The open air coffee shop is outside the museum. Quite pleasant having an afternoon tea here!

Lots of eye-catching opera facials are hanging on the walls.

Ms. Peng said that tourism industry was affected a lot by the SARS. Therefore, they started to paint the opera facial and completed almost a thousand pieces within 3 years.

The facial DIY painting is an activity that we definitely would not miss. If we had enough time, we would have selected a smaller and more challenging blue clothes decoration. There are 6 patterns for the blue clothe decorations. Pick the one you like and start to paint.

After each coloring, wait until it dries to add another color to avoid mixing the colors. It looks very simple, but it is quite challenging to get the line straight and even.

After all the colors were in, the water prove coating was added to complete the whole process. After this, take a break by strolling in the park or drink a cup of tea!

We did that masks at my school in Malaysia too.
I put my artwork on my bedroom wall, but I took them down eventually, it was kinda scary to look at in sleepless nights! Ha ha...

Did they show you 四川變臉 at the Centre?
My mother who has been to Sichuan told me that was really amazing!!
Better than magic! Ha ha...

Very informative! I've always heard about 'Fa Dan' in Cantonese opera I'm not sure exactly the meaning of the two words. I thought 'Fa Dan' is a general term for opera singers :) Thanks for sharing!

The framed opera masks on the wall are beautiful! Hey Micki, what is written on those small wooden plates beneath the wall mask?

Cheers!

@Mylo- I think what you said the "Fa Dan" in Cantonese is the "Hua Dan" in Mandarin. "Hua Dan" means "female character" in the Opera. The plate beneath the opera facial indicates what the character represents. The signatures of the media or celebrities are also showing on some plates.

@Fufu- I thought the changing face is awesome,, and still trying to figure out how they do that...?

@Rafael- I thought the idea of making a large size of the facial in the park is very creative and definitely is eye-catching as well!

The masks are truly beautiful!

I went to see Chinese opera a couple of times in Beijing but I didn't understand much about it. I should have read more about the meaning of the masks etc.

@Zhu- Indeed it is hard to understand the Chinese Opera even we are the native speakers. Sometimes the subtitle of the script may help a little bit! :)
