Beishi Old Street, Jingliao

Jingliao Village is located in the Houbi Township, Tainan County and a famous rice granary in Taiwan. A documentary film was shot in here and made Jingliao a tourist attraction. Although full of tourists now, Jingliao has kept the original lovely and simple lifestyle.

Jingliao Village used to be the midpoint from Tainan to Chiayi during Qing Dynasty. The gathering of businessmen and vendors created the street market. Jingliao used to be the liveliest settlement along the Bazhang River

A few traditional shops are still operated on the old street at present, such as “Jiancheng Lead Bucket Shop”. However, due to the materials cost is low and cheap; the Lead Bucket Shop is not run as good as before. It only has a small amount of orders, and the majority of job is the bucket repair.

“Jindexing Pharmacy” is the County historic site which has about 250 year history. This building was built with the traditional mortise technique and no nails were used. It has attracted filming of almost 30 TV shows.

The owner of the Pharmacy, Mr. Ruan, was so friendly. He let us take photos with no flash. “Jindexing Pharmacy” has stopped operating since 1999. The medicine cabinet and bowls can still be seen inside.

When we were crossing by a clock shop, 3 elderly were chatting and inviting us in. Mr. Yin’s “Ruirong Clock Shop” is about 60 years old; it preserved 50 old fashion clocks. Some of them have a decade history and are still working.

For the non-battery operated clocks, besides using a pendulum or a winding for the power source, how would you make these clocks run? Mr. Yin tested us with this question once we entered the shop. We figured it out later. Now it’s your turn to figure this out: how to make this clock in the photo work?

The kitty seems to be part of the Old Street. Strolling through the Old Street in Taiwan, the kitties are seen everywhere.

The old time nylon bag with grand mom’s colorful fabric has become a very unique handbag.

On the corner of the Beishi Old Street, a historic well is there since Holland Era. The villagers relied on this well for drinking and washing. Water still can be seen in the well and visitors can experience the digging fun of the well water.

Next to the well, “Holland Well Yongquaan Family Lodging” was where I stayed and is a traditional courtyard family lodging. It displays the traditional farm tools and furniture, such as farmer’s clothes, mortar, bamboo baskets, and pole, etc... The owner of the family lodging has turned this place into a “Farmer’s life experience museum”, offering guided tour, bamboo rain hat coloring, rice grinding DIY, tiding scarecrow, carrying the bamboo pole activities. Visitors would gain farming experience in this family lodging.

In the evening, we sat on the bamboo chair and bamboo bed in the courtyard to enjoy the breeze, watching stars and chatting.

A small laundry area is also in the courtyard. Visitors can experience clothe washing; children like to play here during the summer time.

All rooms are offering floor beds with shared bathroom. They are very clean and simple. Each room is air-conditioned, so no worries for the summer heat.

@Mei- Actually, I am very curious as well since there was no one around to find out the answer when I took that photo. Sorry~~

@Fufu- Interesting! I would love to see those old houses in Malaysia in the near future too!

Nice hotel! This is a kind of place I would enjoy staying at. Homey yet simple and clean.

Mmm... could the clock work with water or lemon juice? I know some clocks too. His shop is fascinating! I have a thing for watches and clocks and I would have taken hundreds of pictures!

kristen and micki said...

@Londoncaller- Indeed that required lots of work! However, it's hard to find those antique clocks now which have become very valuable.

@Zhu-The answer is ~~ That clock works by it's own gravity! :)

250 years old pharmacy??? That's A.W.E.S.O.M.E! This building reminds me of Wong Fei-hung medicine shop at 寶芝林 :)

LOVE Mr Yin natural smile and his V-sign :)

kristen and micki said...

@Mylo-Indeed this pharmacy has attracted filming almost 30 TV shows, perhaps Wong Fei-Hung was filmed there too! LOL ;O)

i'm hoping all these historical sites be they old pharmacies, clock workshops etc be preserved. they tell so much of a story.

kristen and micki said...

@Lechua-Yes, they have been preserved very well and have become the valuable local assets. Indeed it is hard to find those treasures now.
