San Diao Ling Station。Ping Si Branch

Built in the Keelung river valley, San Diao Ling train station is a very special and stunning mini station. There are not many riders and visitors on this station even during weekends; perhaps this quiet atmosphere has kept me attracted.

PS: San Diao Ling was the starting point of the Ping Si branch. However, due to the small land and the decline of the coal mining business in San Diao Ling, the starting point of Ping Si branch changed to Jui Fang or Hon Dong. This is the reason there are so many versions of the starting point of Ping Si branch.

According to the legend, Spaniard sailed to this place and named it for “St. Diago”, which means “Beautiful Place”. The local residents, based on its pronunciation, named it “San Diao Ling”. It was hard to believe that San Diao Ling was once the command center for the coal trains when I first saw this train station.

The second platform is very narrow and next to a cliff. The cliff is covered with all kinds of ferns and plants. Passengers can enjoy the thriving scene while waiting for the train.

The old signs were piled up in the corner of the platform.

Since the station is very small with limited space, it is impossible to build a pedestrian bridge. All passengers would need to cross the railway tracks to go to the platform.

This cement house was an abandoned signal building. Many railway enthusiasts come here to feel the past.

Because the station was built next to the Keelung River, there is no road once you exit the door. The passengers can only exit on a small concrete path.

Yi Lan line and Ping Si line intersect at the San Diao Ling station, and then are divided into two. The railway on the left goes to Yi Lan, and on the right to Ping Si also known as Waterfall Township.

This underpass is for pedestrians to cross the tracks. Not too many passengers use it. They across the railroad tracks directly.

I am not the only one crossing the tracks; the kitty is doing that too.

If you look closely, you can find an entrance of an old tunnel near the station.

San Diao Ling train is the only transportation for the residents here. Fortunately, trains come here frequently to meet the residents’ needs.

Although the coal mining industry declined and ended the golden years of San Diao Ling, this place is still fulfilled with cultural history worthwhile to visit.

I miss trains, they reminds me of Europe!

On a side note, I love your blog because I'm finally forcing myself to read non-simplified characters! I learned mainland Chinese ;-)

Hi, Zhu
I am glad that you are able to read the traditional Chinese. Please let me know if you need any help in reading the traditional Chinese characters below okay :)

I'm a 'banana' - total Chinese noob :) But, I like your captions! Well researched facts and figures.

That kitty crossing....LOL!

Have you traveled to Malaysia before? You'll love our KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) intercity train services. You can travel from Malaysia to Thailand and Singapore with KTM. Also, you can catch some jungle scenery and countryside via KTM jungle railway connection from Gemas to Wakaf Baru.

Cheers!

To Mylo-I have not been to Malaysia and Singapore. Have been to Thailand. That sounds very exciting and fun to see all these three countries on the KTM with the jungle scenery.

To fufu- Thanks! Sounds like you went to the four major cities in Taiwan. Plan to visit some hitorical small towns, mountain tribal areas, or the hotspring places...etc. Those will give you different taste and experience :)

Have you seen the movie that was shot mostly at this station a few years ago? It was one of those that played at the film festivals, and then maybe a week or two at the cinemas. I saw it on DVD. I think the title was 小站. Not a whole lot of action-- kind of a slow-moving ultra-realism stlye. Very cool if you like trains.

I don't think the term "St. Diago" exists in Spanish. The closest would be St. Diego, but that doesn't mean "beautiful place." It's just means "Saint Diego" (Diego is considered the Spanish form of the English name "James").
