The Gold Legend of Shuinandong

Below the Jinguashi, Shuinandong is a great place to visit when you visit Jiufen Jinguashi. It has a very unique and beautiful landscape called the “Golden Waterfall”

Jinguashi mine rocks are exposed. Because of the rain erosion and the oxidation, it developed the slightly yellow acid mine water. It creates the golden shine on the waterfall which has become a wedding photography and photographers’ hot spot for photography. We can always see people taking photos in front of the waterfall.

The yellow color creek down below the water fall looks gorgeous, but it contains high arsenic, so please do not get into the water.

A large tan color building was built on the top of the mountain in the Shuinandong Scenic Area with a precious coal mine ruin site which used to be the Mine Selection Plant. The Mine Selection Plant was built along the hills and it has 13 stories. It used to be called “13 stories” by the miners and residents.

The mining process can be divided into four steps. The excavated mine rocks had to be screened preliminary. The good quality mine rock would be sent to the Mine Selection Plant to be selected carefully again. The 13 Story Mine Selection Plant had the most advanced technology and became the most representative building in the Jinguashi mine area.

In the back of the 13 Story ruins, the three black giant snakes looking concrete pipes winding on the top of mountains. They were the exhaust pipes that were built to avoid pollution. The process of refining coopers could cause lots of smoke which contain high arsenic toxic metals and could damages on human body. These giant exhaust pipes diverted the exhaust up to the high mountain in order to avoid the toxic impact to the local residents and miners.

After the 13 Story Mine Selection Plant were closed and the pipes abandoned, they have become unique scenes around the mountains. The 2 kilometer long exhaust pipe is the world’s longest chimney. However, the internal structure has been eroded and broken, and the toxic materials still can be seen. Visitors are not allowed to go inside!

The Liandong Bay of Shuinandong of the Coastal Highway, the sea color is the unique yellow brown color. It is totally different from the regular sea color; therefore, this is also known as” Yin-Yang Sea”.

The formation of the “Yin-Yang Sea” has many versions. Some said that it was created by the waste water from the Mine Selection Plant, while others suggested that it was created by the rich minerals under the Jinguashi area. There is still not an answer on how the “Yin-Yang Sea” was formed.

PS: Due to the cloudy raining day that made the water turbid when I was there, the Yin-Yang Sea could not be seen. If it is sunny, the clear yellow and blue water can be easily seen.

Connecting Shuinandong and Jinguashi, “Jinshui Road’ is a beautiful winding cliff mountain road. The road wraps around the hills and climbs up with one side right next to the vertical cliff. Many large, one after another turns and imposing scenery are Taiwan’s films’ hot shooting spots.

The horse tail flowers are bloomed on both sides of the road during fall and winter seasons making the road even more beautiful.

To visit Jinguashi, Jiufen, and Shuinandong, you can take the 827 and 825 buses at Ruifang Railway Station. (PS: bus 825 is only operated during weekends and holidays). Read More

What a coincidence! I just posted something about "golden" in my blog and I came across your "golden" waterfall here!

It's so beautiful yet poisonous!
Just like rhododendrons. Ha ha...
Did you know that?!
Bees in Turkey collected nectar produced by rhododendrons, and people who consumed that honey got food poisoning.

I can see yin and yang in Photo 8!
Now, we just need to add two dots in the photo. Ha ha...

That's a unique waterfall! The ground surface and yellowish creek (with mine rocks and sediments) reminds me of Planet Mars :) Hmmmmm, I wonder what happens if a child accidentally fall into the creek?

The remnants of the coal industry is still visible in Shuinandong. Coal Selection Plant and giant snake pipes. Interesting!!! The picture of 'leaking' pipe caught my attention. Looks like mini Chernobyl to me.

Micki, thanks for the wonderful translation :)

@Londoncaller- Wow, rhododendrons nectar poisoning!? Mm..the Yin-Yang do need two dots to connect!

@Mylo- You are very welcome! My pleasure always!

@Rafael- I am sure you will enjoy this place for your photography!

@Zhu- Good idea! It will definitely be an interesting long winding trail of light~~

Yes, so it's important you know where your bees collect their honey.
Honey bee is getting very popular these days in London.
There's a special exhibition about "pharming".
Have you heard about this term?
Basically, people start to modify plants DNA to produce other dangerous stuff. Eg, using tomato to grow drugs.
Bees that collect those genetic modified pollen deposit the nectar in their bees. And they will "dance" to show other bees where to find the source.
Using this animal behaviour, the police set up a beehive on top of police station to monitor illegal use of pharming.
Isn't this interesting?

Re: Light of hope / 希望之光 / Cahaya harapan / 希望の光

Its exterior is less interesting, only the main tower remains, the rest was destroyed during the war.
