Cow Parade in Taipei, 2009

Cow Parade, the world’s largest and the most successful public art exhibition started in Zurich in 1998. After Chicago, New York, Prague, Sydney, Tokyo…., the exhibit came to Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei was the 65th city of the Cow Parade exhibit. It was also the largest exhibit among those in all the Asia counties. The 107 stunning arts were displayed in Taipei’s busy shopping districts. Although the Cow Parade was conducted in 2009, the colorful cow paintings represented different characteristics of Taiwan, which was worthwhile to bring them up to share again.

Located in the Taipei City Hall is the No.1 painted cow. This cow was painted with 13 totems. The 13 elements represent 13 different tribes in Taiwan, which are Atayal, Saisiyat, Bunun, Tsou, Rukai, Paiwan, Puyuma, Amis, Tao, Thao, Kavalan, Truku, and Sakizaya. I could not tell which totem belongs to which tribe, however, I was very sure that the facial totem of the cow is from Atayal, the second largest tribes in Taiwan.

The “Qian Niu” (Cow with lucky tags) is the creation form Taipei Long Shan Temple. The Jiao Bei (a worshipping item - 2 pieces of wood in half moon shape with red color) and Qian Tong (a tube which hold bamboo lucky sticks) are located next to the cow. The cow itself is a wardrobe for all the poem tags. Each wardrobe can be opened. It said that there were lucky tags in there. I found it out later, so I missed picking a tag.

This cow was painted with a unique traditional Hakka flower pattern. Any products made with Hakka’s flower patterns fabrics would give a nostalgic feeling, such as cup holders, purses, tissue covers, or pillows…etc.

PS: You may have seen the flower pattern fabrics from the “Hakka Blue Shirts” post.

This cow was named “Taiwan Night Market” which represents the night life in Taiwan. It was painted with all the local popular snacks, such as Lemon Aiyu, BBQ corn, crushed ice dessert, bun, BBQ squid, Pearl Jelly Milk Tea…etc. They all looked so tempting!

PS: Can you see someone eating a BBQ corn? Ha! That’s me, Kristen!

The photo above: The small steam dumpling is another popular snack in Taiwan. It is also one of my favorites.

The photo below: This green cow is painted with Hey Song Soda images. Hey Song Soda brought up lots of our childhood memories!

The Pearl Jelly Milk Tea is a cold drink originated in Taiwan. Now it can be seen in many places in the world. Have you tasted the Pearl Jelly Milk Tea?

This cow was painted with Ba Jia Jiang (Eight Generals). They are eight deities who are responsible to expel devils and are showing up in the worship parade. Each general wears different makeup and costume, having different meanings. They play very important roles in the local worship festivals. There is a “Peace” writing in the center of the cow face. The abstract facial painting of the “Eight Generals” is shown on the cow’s body.

This cow is named “2357”, which is the stock code of ASUSTeK Computer Inc, and she represents ASUSTeK. This elegant and highly motivated cow is painted with all the computer chips. It also wears 2357 chip battle gear. The cow is biting a rose that was made with chips which represent victory, high-tech, and courage.

I forgot the name of this painted cow. It looks very interesting. I like it a lot.

I was very impressed with these beautiful peacocks, tigers and other patterns designs which were put together by the colorful mosaics.

I was also surprised by this black and white elegant looking painted cow. There were a total of 107 painted cows in this event. I did not get to see all of them, but I was very impressed with what I saw. I hope you will like them as well! Read More

Ha ha... I hope you enjoyed the sweetcorn!

What a coincidence! We are having something similar in London at the moment.
Instead of cows, we use the elephants! Yes, it's the Elephant Parade.
There are about 250 elephants scattered all over London, but I have only seen about 20 of them. Ha ha... Guess I'll be busy shooting elephants this month.

If you're interested, you can find more information about the parade here:

This is pretty cool!

I also saw something similar in Buenos Aires last year, except it was bears, each one represented a country (not the best picture of it, but the only one I uploaded on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/xiaozhuli/3513301029/in/set-72157613319635690/).

I must say these cows are really pretty... there is no way they would have used cows in Argentina, given the country's taste for beef and BBQ :-D

No wonder why some of them look familiar - they were actually exhibited in New York! Well traveled cows, I must say!

There's also the Pig Parade in Bath, England!!!
I actually prefer this. They are smaller and cuter!

Ha ha... Almost like an animal party!

@Londoncaller- The elephants look very artistic and colorful! Look forward to seeing London’s elephants on your blog soon. Pig Parade-It sounds very interesting! Do you have pictures of Paris’ cow parade?

@Zhu- I like the idea of having each bear present a country. It’s so nice to see that we are having all kinds of animals’ parade in the world! It would be so fun if we can put our parade pictures together from all over the world~~

@The Nomadic Pinoy- New York’s cow parade must have its own design that would represent the region, country, or culture. They must be different from Taipei’s… :):)

@Dennis-I thought those artworks were fascinating! It was also an excellent opportunity to promote the city…

@ Todd- Indeed each piece was a collectable artwork. I am glad that we get to show our collections to all of you!

@Rafael- I like the way they made an abstract art for Ba Jia Jiang. It turned out so gorgeous and eye catching!

when i first read the title i was expecting a parade of live cows... never heard of this before - so in each country, the cows are painted to reflect the country of the exhibition? the Taiwan
Night Market looks abit 3D-like. and the milk tea is funny! some very intricate designs on the last few photos..

Yes, of course I took some pictures of the Cow Parade in Paris too.
I tend to lose my track quite easily. Too many pictures to sort out...

One thing I like about the Elephant Parade is that they put a group of elephants together and called it a Happy Herd. If I just do the Happy Herd, maybe I can finish my elephant hunting soon! Ha ha...

@Lechua- Here is the Wikipedia info for the Cow Parade: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CowParade
It also shows the pictures of the Cow Parade from different counties. It seems like each city designs its cows to reflect the local cultural characteristics, life, or features representative artwork. The 3D-look market food indeed was very tempting, and that BBQ corn tasted so yummy! ;o)

@Londoncaller- Hope you are enjoying your elephant hunting. It sounds like we get to see the elephant, pig, and cow parade pictures soon from different countries! :)

WOW! This is S.U.P.E.R.B! I'm waiting for cow parade to come to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! Hoping to see a durian cow, a flying cow over KLCC and a 1 Malaysia cow :)

I've read so much about cow parade. I didn't know that these cows are customized according to the country 'flavors'. That's pretty unique and creative.

My favourite is siew mai 烧卖 cow. Loads of beef there :)

Cheers!
