Shi Fen Station, Old Street and Waterfall。Ping Si Branch

When you come to Shi Fen station by train, you would notice that Shi Fen station is larger than other Ping Si Branch stations. In fact, Shi Fen is the largest station. Beside San Diao Ling station, Shi Fen is the one has the dual tracks which allow trains to intersect here.

There are two platforms in this station; one is a shore-type platform, the other an island-type platform. The second platform standing in the rails looks like a small island.

Next to the station is the Shi Fen Old Street. The houses are built adjacent to the rails. When the residents sat in front of their houses to chat, they don’t hear the birdsongs, but the train rumbling sound.

There are fabric stores, bamboo hat shops, grocery stores, noodle and snack bar, as well as the souvenirs stores, sky lanterns shops, or even the fruits and vegetables vendors are next to each other. Although this is a tourist place, the old street still has the rural relaxing feeling. Residents sit in front of their houses to enjoy the cool air, chat, and eat.

Doggy is used to the rumbling noise of the trains; it still sleeps soundly.

Shi Fen Old Street is not only a photography place, but also a good painting place. I have encountered a group of grandpas and grandmas who came here to paint from Japan.

The famous “Jingan Suspension Bridge” is located behind the train station. It connects the village of Shi Fen and Nanshan. Jingan Suspension Bridge was originally used for transporting coal. After the operation was ended, the government renovated it to become a pedestrian bridge.

Here is the scenery from the suspension bridge.

If you drive to Shi Fen, you would see Nanshan village. The residents here painted their window, door and exterior walls to blue. It is one of the characteristics of this village.

About 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the Old Street, I arrived at the Shi Fen Waterfall which is the widest, largest, and most abundant water waterfalls in Taiwan. Pass the Shi Fen Visitor Center, here is “Shi Fen Waterfall Scenery Area”

Into this area, the first thing that catches my eyes is a wide pool surrounded by the landscaped pools. It is “Siguang Pond”. Follow the trail by the pond; I also see the potholes in the pond.

At the end of the trail, a 6 meter tall and wide waterfall is there. The both sides of the cave looks like the giant glasses, it is named “Glasses Hole”.

There is a suspension bridge next to the “Glasses Hole”. On the bridge, you overlook the whole “Glasses Hole”. This bridge is an access to the “Shi Fen Waterfall”

After crossing the suspension bridge, walked along the rail for a while and I arrived at “Shi Fen Waterfall”.

Shi Fen Waterfall is about 40 meter wide and 20 meter tall. During the raining seasons, the abundant water dumping strongly, made the impact on the huge rocks to form a splendid waterfall. The picture was taken during the dry season, but it still looks beautiful. Read More

Picture 4 caught my attention! The railway tracks are SO CLOSE to the residential houses. I guess the trains must be moving at a slow speed when approaching the houses. Also, I didn't see any fences to prevent people from jaywalking across the tracks.

In Malaysia, almost 90% of the tracks are surrounded with fences on both side of the tracks. But then again, people still take the risk to crossover the tracks illegally. Many fatal accidents. Train drivers who accidentaly killed the trespasser needs to collect all the remaining chunks all by himself. Here is an interesting article as reported in New Straits Times, Malaysia:

IT'S NOT A CUSHY JOB

I always wanted to explore the small towns via train ride. Your articles inspired me. REALLY!

Cheers!

To Mylo- The Ping Si train is slower than other trains. The local residents grew up with the railroad; they are spending their daily activities by the tracks. The visitors may think this is an unbelievable lifestyle, but to them this is their life. I think you may like this small train trip. There are not too many lodgings available along the railroad. If you are interested in experiencing this, I will be glad to help! :):)

“It’s not a cushy job”- hum.. I won’t be interested in this job for sure. I wonder if the train driver in Malaysia would receive a higher pay?

90% are fenced in Malaysia, wow! Sounds like lots of overhead bridges are needed too. In Taiwan and US, my observation is toward intersection and cities with heavy traffic it would need fences, rest of the areas no fences though..

each station seems to have it's own story along the Ping Si Branch... great coverage on all the stations so far.. and again this one with the lifestyle of local shopkeepers and painters.

(ok and i just ready mylo's comment above... i'm from msia too but wasn't aware of the gory ordeal that train drivers had to deal with)

Nice natural place again! Just seen the waterfall of KL in lechua blog...
The most near waterfall for me is in China,
I went there some years before…
but when I didn’t have a good photography skill and was hard to take pictures
because I was following a hiking path…
May be you can see there in my friend blog:

When I was young, I got a book out from my school library, called the Elephant Man. It was so sad but the fact is still the same: People always judge others by their looks.

Nice scenes from Taiwan. I visited Taiwan when I was a young child so couldn't remember much about the country.

http://www.pbase.com/simonlan/image/97477680

http://www.pbase.com/simonlan/image/97600473

Hi, Simon Thank you so much for providing your wonderful photos and giving us the detail reply. The waterfall image is excellent, now we can really see the height of the waterfall :)

I like the waterfalls. I don't know why, but they relax me. I could stand there, looking at the water, for hours. I believe waterfalls are popular in Asia (from what I have seen on paintings), but do they have a special meaning? Just curious.

I can't believe how close to the tracks are the houses! It must be very noisy. I guess the train doesn't go too fast around there.

I like how you capture the atmosphere of the place!

Thanks Zhu! I like water sound as well. I have a fish tank at home. By watching the fishes and listening to the water flowing sound that could put me to sleep! :) Indeed waterfall is a very popular subject in the Chinese painting. That is a good question about if it has a specail meaning. So far we are not aware of it, but it definitely is a very beautiful subject to see and to realx :)
